Portuguese airline Hi Fly has big ambitions for the New Year. It wants to be the “world’s first ‘plastic-free’ airline within 12 months,” announced Hi Fly President Paulo Mirpuri inside a press statement, adding that it takes this “commitment very seriously.”
To put its money where its mouth is, Hi Fly has initiated the first of four trials where its passenger plane took off without any single-use plastics on board. Many items that are typically manufactured using plastic have been replaced with eco-friendlier alternatives.
This includes plastic cutlery substituted with bamboo flatware, meals served on biodegradable paper trays, and eco-friendlier bags for passengers who have motion sickness.
This first trial flight took place on 26 December through its Lisbon to Natal, Brazil route. “The test flights will prevent around 350 KG of single-use, virtually indestructible plastics from poisoning our environment,” explained Mirpuri. Hi Fly’s goal is to make its whole fleet plastic-free by end 2019.
“Over 100,000 flights take off each day around the world and, last year, commercial aircraft carried nearly four billion passengers. This number is expected to double again in less than 20 years. So, the potential to make a difference here is clearly enormous,” said Mirpuri.
And in this Christmas Season we are proud to announce our gift for the planet Earth: the world's first Single Use #PlasticFree Flight. #TurnTheTideOnPlastic #MirpuriFoundation #togetherforabetterworld #A340 #9HSUN pic.twitter.com/eBAYRyk36q
