The New Year signifies a fresh start for many, including job seekers on the lookout for opportunities and how to spruce up their résumés to better adapt to the 2019 job market.
In addition to the top 10 skills that will get you hired faster in 2019, Refinery29 has put together a list of nine valued interpersonal skills that potential employers are on the lookout for in candidates.
According to Shannon Breuer, president of investment advisor the Wiley Group, recruiters tend to spend roughly 10 seconds glancing through each résumé. As such, it’s crucial for applicants to clearly emphasize their achievements and top three to five complex skills that are relevant to the job.
Breuer adds that it is important for candidates to justify interpersonal skills with specific results. He advises contemplating about the specific job, industry, its requirements, and the skills needed to advance.

Being a creative and effective problem solver
Generating resourceful solutions to various problems is a valued skill that reflects your ability to adapt and innovate. While imaginative resolutions are refreshing, they have to be successful in nipping issues in the bud.
Inspiring others as a leader
Leadership could well be one of the toughest skills to master; even though many bosses and managers exist worldwide, the number of true leaders are much fewer by the numbers.
While some individuals are naturally gifted in this area, it is possible to groom yourself to pick up positive management traits and eventually build great teams that you’re proud of.
One key characteristic of superb leaders is the ability to inspire others in achieving their best. Great leaders build up positive work environments that are the antithesis to toxic work cultures, which not only cause employees to regress, but also makes work an extremely dreary experience.
Able to engage an audience as dynamic speaker
Those keen on a career related to sales or public relations should highlight this skill on their résumé. Public speaking can be a fearful task for many, so if you have a knack for giving engaging presentations that don’t bore audiences to death, it’s certainly a skill to feel proud of.
Contributing as a collaborative team player
Showing that you can assist well within group settings and get along with others are plus points. This ties in with your ability to communicate effectively with peers, support co-workers, and do your part to boost strong teamwork, all of which are traits of admirable work cultures.
