Banksy’s thoughts on Paris Hilton circa early 2000s seemed to mirror what many now feel about social media influencers.

In 2006, the incognito street artist “reinterpreted” 400 to 500 copies of the socialite’s Paris album by bimbo-fying them. The CD’s cover artwork was hijacked with exposed breasts, with its inner pages replaced with collages that provoked the apparent “glamor” of Hilton’s life.

Banksy then planted the copies in 48 record stores across the UK in August 2006. One of the CDs is now being sold by auction house RR Auction with an estimated closing price of about US$2,000.

In one collage, the celebrity is seen stepping out from a vehicle next to some homeless people. It is paired with the text, “90-percent of success is just showing up.” Another reveals Hilton on a sofa with the caption, “Life wasn’t meant to be fair.”

The copy’s inner tray artwork also has Hilton’s head swapped out for that of Tinkerbell, her chihuahua.

The visuals that come with this spoof are one thing. With the help of American musician DJ Danger Mouse, Banksy remixed Hilton’s tracks, giving them new titles: Why Am I Famous?; What Have I Done?; and What Am I For?

The album arrives with a letter that reads, “The Banksy Paris Hilton Signed CD… [is the] original first issue and was obtained from HMV London when Banksy and his team planted the CDs in the music outlets. The CD has both original barcodes…”

The note by the seller details that the CD was purchased, “from Tony at Raven Records who acquired it from Banksy art dealer Andrew Blumson who also had a gallery in Brick Lane. He purchased it from a HMV employee.”
