Banksy’s Latest Mural In South Wales Nearly Gets Destroyed By ‘Drunk Halfwit’

A “drunk halfwit” has attempted to destroy Banksy’s latest mural at Port Talbot, South Wales.

The latest artwork by the anonymous British street artist involves two sides—one that sees a child playing in the snow, while the other reveals that the snowflakes are actually ashes from a fire. The graffiti has attracted about 2,000 visitors since its installation and has been protected with a temporary plastic sheet.

According to the Neath Port Talbot Life Facebook page that is run by Gary Owen, a drunkard had apparently tried to pull down the protective layer. The post reads, “Some drunk halfwit has tried to pull the fencing down and the protection glazing at the Banksy artwork. This art is for Port Talbot, Neath and surrounding areas. We do not want it wrecked.”

Thankfully, the security guard hired to protect the artwork had chased down the culprit and called the police before any damage could be done to the artwork. Hollywood actor Michael Sheen contributed the newly-fitted plastic screen, while a local movie star helped to pay for security guards to protect the art.

Owen, who had reached out to Banksy to ask if the artist would create a mural in Port Talbot back in August, said it was an honor that the street artist had decided to create one on the garage wall in the area. Owen hopes that the locals would treasure this privilege and that no harm would come to the artwork, in fears that such an event would also ruin the reputation of Port Talbot.

He expressed concern that the mural could become a target for someone “who wants to make a name for themselves.” After the incident, traffic wardens were asked to monitor the flow of vehicles while awaiting for a permanent solution to safeguard the mural in the upcoming year.
