The internet universe is rapidly expanding and has been since its invention way back in 1990 by UK Computer Scientist Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee. The pace of this expansion is gaining pace.
The web is more like a universe or even many universes joined together now. According to website "worldwidewebsize.com" – there are at least 9.07 billion pages now on the internet (Figures as of 26th October 2012).
In order to navigate your way around the universe and to understand the different planets within the universe (those helpful to you, from a business promotion perspective) you need to take time to explore the universe, the many different worlds within the Universe or the Language & Culture of those worlds!
As with most universes there are many large planets within the web universe and most people are aware of these. Planets like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+ & MySpace domiate this space and these large planets in themselves take a lot of exploration or the use of a very good guide to help you get around and get the most out of each location.
Often to get the most out of the Internet worlds you need to learn the language and get used to the culture in order to really get on.
In addition to the well known and well used social media sites according to Wikipedia, their are 345 social media sites to explore and many are niche, but could they be suitable for your niche?
According to EbizMBA.com the top 10 in order of ranking and monthly usage figures are;
You can dip in and out of the different worlds and stumble your way around but to get the most out of planet requires a fair bit of time spent learning & developing or the use of a guide to help speed things up a bit.
On top of the Social Media Business networking and promoting sites there are also major E-commerce or classified ad worlds for those looking to sell product & services (Amazon, Hootsmart, Ebid, GumTree, Freeads, adtrader, locanto, loot.com, freeukclassifieds, Piston heads), to name a few, as well as many database driven worlds for business promotion – otherwise know as directory sites: (Freeindex, Yell, Thomson’s, Soho, Qype, Locate.so, Working Bees) to name a few.
Then there are blogging sites, such as WordPress, Blogger & Tumblr which are again their own worlds that you can learn about engage with and get more out of.
The are also picture and video marketing and socialising websites such as (Instagram, Pinterest, Flickr, Picasa and old favourites Youtube, Facebook & Twitter), which are ideal again for those selling products or events, shows, tourism and other services which are image lead.
Often understanding how the different worlds work can help you get the most out of them for your business.
If you can streamline your use of the different systems and track a good course through the worlds in order to get around them as quickly & efficiently as possible you will find that you will build up your business websites traffic, your brand awareness and your websites internet page rankings, which as long as your product, pricing and sales messages are also good, should help to impace your sales revenue and eventually your bottom line (Profits).
