Whether people like to admit it or not, a smartphone’s camera is often the deciding factor to whether or not they would end up getting the device, which is why this ultimate test might serve of use to you.
Renowned tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee has pitted 16 flagship smartphones from 2018 against each other to discover the one with the camera that’s perceived to have the greatest quality, and the results are seriously surprising.
To conduct the test, Brownlee snapped the same photos using all 16 handsets, composited them in twos, and got his followers to vote on their favorite one of each pair.
The YouTuber codenamed each gadget, so voters were not aware of which model shot which photo. Millions of votes poured in, Brownlee said.
Apple users, look away. As it turns out, the iPhone XS faltered in the first round, bowing down to… the Blackberry Key2. You read that right.
Despite being arguably superior to the iPhone XS lenses, Google’s Pixel range also suffered against smartphone cameras that aren’t as esteemed.
Out of the 16, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro reigned supreme, thanks to its Leica triple cameras.
That isn’t to say that the more recognized models have inferior cameras. Looking back, Brownlee learned that people tend to perceive a photo’s quality by its brightness.
“The most important thing to people… was just exposure; brightness, basically,” he concluded. “Nine times out of 10, the brighter, more saturated, more punchy-contrasty photo won… it’s pretty consistent.”
Take note, Apple and Google.
