Samsung Used Photo Taken With DSLR To Advertise Its Smartphone Camera

Photographer Dunja Djudjic at DIY Photography claimed Samsung Malaysia has used one of her images to advertise the Galaxy A8 Star’s portrait mode capabilities.

Djudjic suspected Samsung licensed the image from her through Getty Images, but the image wasn’t captured using the A8 Star. It was actually taken using Djudjic’s own DSLR.

Samsung however, did not state that the photo has been taken using the A8 Star, but the page where the photo is displayed certainly implied otherwise. The page which showed Djudijic’s image also featured A8’s dual rear cameras, somehow implying a connection that the photo was taken by the smartphone.

Djudjic’s image has also been edited by Samsung. The subject in the image has been cut out from its foreground and pasted on a different background. The subject’s face has also been color-corrected as well.

Using stock imagery to advertise a camera’s capabilities might be perceived as false advertising by many as customers might have the wrong idea of what the device is capable of.

This is not the first time Samsung got caught using a DSLR image to advertise its phone’s capabilities. Samsung Brazil previously did the same thing in August and went as far as adding watermarks to two stock photos to pose as Galaxy A8 selfies.
