Unlike typical IKEA stores wired to influence you into taking more products home, its upcoming location isn’t.
The Swedish giant has unveiled its plans to open its first “city center store” in the US. A far cry from the usual outlets plotted on secluded land, the new store, which will launch in Spring 2019, will be located in the accessible Manhattan. More specifically, 999 Third Avenue, NY, NY.
What might be more peculiar to some, though, is that you won’t be able to take anything home from this store—except, maybe, memories.
Called the ‘Planning Studio’, it functions as a showroom that lets you look at products, order them, and then head back home and wait for them to be delivered to you.
“It will give customers the opportunity to discover, select, and order IKEA products for delivery to their home, which is what urban residents want and need,” the company described.
It’s great that you can purchase a sofa without having to pivot it up on a staircase, but anyone who isn’t ‘Ross Geller’ from Friends might miss the appeal of carrying something in their hands.
