If you’ve ever awoken in the middle of the night to cringe at an oops moment you had at work, take refuge that you’re not this Googler with momentary butter fingers.
According to the Financial Times, a training exercise at Google had gone awry after an employee published a mock ad on a “huge number” of webpages and apps.
The dummy visual, which was simply a blank yellow rectangle, went live across various websites and apps for approximately 45 minutes on 4 December. The ad was only visible in the US and Australia.
The gaffe had occurred during an exercise that taught trainees how to use Google’s in-house ad placement program. Apparently, one of them “went further than intended” by completing a live order for an ad.
Unfortunately for the company, the graphic received a higher rate of return than normal, as it was also funneled through several third-party channels.
Google said it would “honor” payments to publishers that had incurred from the blunder. The Financial Times estimates that Google would have to pay about US$10 million to rectify the mistake.
“As soon as we were made aware of this honest mistake, we worked quickly to stop the campaigns running,” Google confirmed in a statement.
It added that tighter controls will be introduced to prevent such f-ups from occurring again.
