Fashion Nova, the clothing label that skyrocketed to fame through social media, is reputed for its absurd pieces and fashion knockoffs.

It therefore almost comes as no surprise that indie fashion brand Riot Society is now suing the company for infringing its copyright.

Riot Society alleges that Fashion Nova has ripped off one of its more popular designs, ‘Panda Rose’, which is emblazoned on a collection of shirts and outerwear for men and women.

Fashion Nova’s version is called the ‘Always Love Sweatshirt’, and retails at US$15. Apart from the tweaked typography in English and Chinese, the fast fashion brand seems to have nearly lifted off Riot Society’s panda graphic.

According to the indie company, it found out about the ‘Always Love Sweatshirt’ last June; upon contacting Fashion Nova to “stop engaging in such infringing conduct,” however, it did not receive a reply.

Riot Society filed the suit in a California court in November, asking for damages of up to US$150,000 per breach of copyright, along with legal fees.
